Balls of Yarn

January 31, 2017

I've been working away in my Sketchbook Project book, creating hand-drawn patterns over watercolor — and trying to get it finished before the return deadline.

If you're not familiar with the Sketchbook Project, it's a cool initiative run by the Brooklyn Art Library where you sign up, they send you a sketchbook (which you can use as-is or re-bind like I've done). You fill it with your art, collage, drawing, whatever you like really, and you can choose to follow a theme or just see where your creativity takes you. Then you send it back to them before the deadline and it goes on a mobile sketchbook tour, around the USA and the world, the following year. People who visit it on the tour can 'check out' your book from their little mobile libary and look through it. Then after the tour your book goes to live in the Art Library where you can visit it (and thousands of others) whenever you're in the neighborhood.

I've been doing the project for years, since I lived back in Australia, and am completely in love with it. The first time you have to send your book back it can be a little sad because you feel like you're saying goodbye to something you worked so hard on, but then once you start seeing other people enjoying your work, it becomes really fun. Plus you can go visit it anytime you happen to be in Brooklyn, so it's not really 'gone'.

Pattern January

January 26, 2017

Anika, over at @AisforAnika put together a month of pattern challenges / inspiration to get the year off to a good start, and it's been wonderful seeing how differently everyone interprets the prompts.

This January has been busier than usual for me, so I haven't participated as much as I would have liked, but here are just a few that I've done so far.

National Handwriting Day - Bounce Lettering with Tombow Brush Markers

National Handwriting Day

January 22, 2017

Please note: This blog post contains affiliate links, which help pay for the upkeep of this site. That being said, I will never, ever promote anything I am not 100% in love with!

Today is National Handwriting Day, and I don't know about you but this year I'm really trying to improve my lettering skills. So, lately I've been practicing my bounce brush lettering using Tombow dual-brush markers. I still need a lot of practice but I'm certainly having fun with it!

Tombow is actually having a sale right now to celebrate National Handwriting Day, you can check it out here if you're interested.

Celebrating National Handwriting Day with Tombow Brush markers and some bounce lettering!

Leave a comment below and let me know what your favorite type of handwriting or lettering is. Calligraphy, block lettering, graffiti style, bubble letters?

How to Prepare for Alt Summit

January 21, 2017

This year Altitude Design Summit or 'Alt Summit' is being held in Palm Springs, at the colorful Saguaro Hotel — and if you haven't been to a creative conference like this one, or Create & Cultivate, before, here's a little guide to help you prepare, feel confident, and get the most out of your experience.

Business Cards

Even in our digital age business cards are still used widely at conferences, and if you don't bring enough you'll definitely be at a disadvantage. If you want business cards that look a million bucks (whether you have design skills or not) I always recommend Moo Cards. You can choose from their designs or upload your own, and they have the ability to print multiple designs in a single pack.

What to Wear

There's no denying that fashion plays a big role in more creative conferences, like this one, and expressing your personality through what you wear is a big part of it. With the Alt Summit taking place in Palm Springs this year it's the perfect opportunity to wear some of those brighter, bolder pieces that may not fit in as well in a bigger, stuffier city. Think loud colors, '50s and '60s inspired pieces, and tropical patterns. Being 7.5 months pregnant my fashion choices are a little more limited than they would be otherwise, but I'm going to do my best. ;)

Definitely leave the high heels at home and either stick to cute flats, or wedges to make sure you're not cringing and limping by the end of the day!

Little Touches

Not only am I taking this opportunity to wear ALL the bright colors I love, but I'll also be painting my nails to match and showing a little of my personality in the way I accessorize.

Rainbow nails

I also have a collection of enamel pins that will quickly let new people know a little about me. That I'm an artist, that I love bright colors, fashion illustration, flamingos, am an introvert, and love photography.

Social Media Clean Up

Chances are you'll meet a lot of lovely new people and exchange social media details. Make sure your accounts are up to scratch and looking their best, and that your bio is clear, relevant and has a strong call-to-action. Check out my free Instagram Clean-Up guide here.

You want your last nine photos to accurately paint the picture of your brand. New visitors to your account take a split second to decide whether to actually follow you or not, so make sure your content is as strong as it can be. If you're feeling stuck for ideas check out my free guide 21 Social Media Prompts for Artists (and other Creatives).

BrownPaperBunny Artist and Fashion Illustrator on Instagram

And last but not least I really recommend using Twitter and Instagram to search the conference hashtag (for example #AltSummit) ahead of time and start connecting with other people that will be there. Not using Twitter? It is brilliant at conferences, people share links and more information on keynote topics, making for a much richer experience. Here's why you should be on Twitter if you're not already.

Scroll down in the widget below to see who's talking about Alt Summit on Twitter already.

#altsummit Tweets

I've also started a Twitter list so you can easily follow other Alt Summit attendees and see what they're all Tweeting about, in one place.

Essential Tech

A charging case for your phone is a must, and it doesn't hurt to bring an external battery as well. You'll find yourself snapping pics and video, posting to social media, looking things up and generally using your phone A LOT during conference days, and you generally can't rely on finding a wall outlet — at least not one you'd want to be tethered to for any length of time. My favorite go-to for charging is the Apple iPhone battery case, and a Mophie Juice pack as a backup.

Sometimes I'll bring along my iPad in a keyboard case to take faster notes or make tweeting easier, but generally I'll leave my laptop at the hotel and just use it for backups and blogging in the evenings.

Other Essentials

If you're a paper and pen junky like me, make sure you bring a pretty notebook (I recommend hard-backed or spiral-bound to make it easier to write on your lap) and why not bring some fun stickers to highlight relevant points or things you hear that you want to explore in more depth later.

Journal with stickers

These sorts of events are highly photographed, so it never hurts to include a hair brush and lipstick in your bag to freshen up towards the end of the day.

Leave me a comment and let me know if you're going to Alt Summit this year, or have been before!

Creative Bootcamp with Lisa Congdon

January 19, 2017

Please note: This blog post contains affiliate links, which help pay for the upkeep of this site. That being said, I will never, ever promote anything I am not 100% in love with!

To start the year off right I'm taking Lisa Congdon's Creative Bootcamp over on CreativeBug. I'm trying to loosen up and let myself experiment more with colors I wouldn't usually use, and exercises that, at first, feel very foreign to me. And I'm having a lot of fun!

Here are just a few of the creations I've made so far, following each week's exercise.

I hadn't done any collage since I was a kid, so it was really fun to get out the scissors and glue and go to town!

Are you trying anything new this year?

Fashion Illustration Friday by BrownPaperBunny

Fashion Illustration Friday

January 13, 2017

Happy Fashion Illustration Friday folks! (Try saying that five times fast) ;)

I'm already missing the Starbucks Red Cups, although the plain white ones leave plenty of room for doodling and decorating them — because sometimes it's fun to draw on something that isn't flat!

Do you ever doodle on cups, objects you find, cereal boxes, other things around the house?

Golden Globes Fashion Illustrations

January 12, 2017

I LOVE watching the red-carpet arrivals at award ceremonies. So many incredible gowns, and so many 'what were they thinking' moments. ;)

So during award season you'll find me spread out at the coffee table in front of the TV, madly sketching my favorite fashions as everyone arrives. The Golden Globes last week were no exception — here are three of my favorites, done in watercolor, ink and loads of glitter!

Are you an awards-show junkie too?

January Instagram Challenge for Artists

January Instagram Challenge

January 1, 2017

This month I'm focusing on improving my Instagram performance to get 2017 off to a good start. If you're interested in joining me on this January challenge, here's what I'm proposing:

Step 1. Clean up your Instagram bio + profile pic: http://bit.ly/fixmyinstagram

Step 2. Post content from this list of 21 Social Media Prompts for Artists, at least twice a week (it's not too big of a commitment — of course feel free to do more if you can commit to more): http://bit.ly/21socialmediaprompts

Step 3. Add #21artistprompts when you post from the list (in the caption or a comment) and the number. For example "#21artistprompts Number 5" for holiday content. That way wecan all find your posts and give some love to the others participating in the challenge.

Step 4. Check in to the Facebook group and let me know how you're going!

You in?
